Tolerance And The Left

A blog called Irregular Times run by a guy named Jim, has had a real hate-on for me for some time now. Jim got really spun up about the letter to the editor tool on GOP.com and the fact that some people used our sample text verbatim, and sent it to newspapers. He keeps track of the number of times the sample text appears under someone else’s name. It’s sort of a bizarre hobby, but he seems to enjoy it.

The one time he really liked something I did (and specifically posted on it), he gave me no credit at all. His most recent posts deal with my unpaid work for Unity08 (largely concluded a year ago) and my paid work for Fred Thompson, and my unpaid efforts to help the National Presidential Caucus (mostly in the comments).

When I get called out on something, I’ll address it directly. I believe in a line from The Untouchables.

Somebody steals from me, I’m going to say ‘you stole’, not talk to him for spitting on the sidewalk.

It’s a tactic I really think more people should adopt. If you have a problem, address the problem. So imagine my shock when I tried exactly that in the comments of a recent post at IT (starting with comment #10), and got this in return:

Of course, working for the Republican Party does pay pretty good. If you look at Turk’s photo, he has not exactly been going hungry.

Come on. Seriously? Is that the best they can do? I challenge this nut’s wild-eyed accusations and conspiracy theories and the best they can offer is “Turk’s fat!”. I mean, really, that’s just sad. I guess the guy couldn’t think fast enough to disparage my mother’s good name.

It reminded me of a story I’ve related before. A childhood friend who is a liberal Democrat living in San Fran related this to me.

I hadn’t been in San Fran for long when I heard about the Castro Street Fair. I thought it would be a lot of fun to check it out. It really represented to me what liberals were all about Рbeing who you want to be without fear of being judged. So I went. I had been there about a half hour when I lit up a cigarette. I couldn’t believe the reaction. I was hissed at. People yelled at me. I thought, “Wait a minute. You’re saying it’s ok to walk around in a leather thong with a vibrator jammed up your ass but f**k me if I smoke.” It was BS.

“Liberal tolerance” is a joke. You need look no further than the attack on my waistline to see what they really mean by “being tolerant.”

On another note, fat can be reduced by dieting. Stupid is forever.

Update: On his blog, Jim correctly called me out for an error in this post. The way it is written, it implies that Jim was the one who made the disparaging remark about weight. In fact, it was one of his readers who made the comment. Jim has always been polite in his posts, if not strangely consumed with what I’m doing for a group.

Now, now, Bogey. I can't very well post about the rudeness of Jim's readers and then not address you calling him a tool. Let's try to keep the discourse civil.

Jim, you sound like a complete and utter tool. I think that sums it up.

I have no issues with acknowledging any of those things. I have been more than forthcoming about the fact that I've done some things I'm very proud of and some I am very unhappy with. The fact that I acknowledged the letter tool at GOP.com was a disappointment has nothing to do with the post. The only reason I mentioned your blog posts was to give a bit of background on how we came to be having the discussion at all. Rick's point was much more salient. There is a tendency in online political discourse for people to reduce the debate to personal attacks. I find your preoccupation with me to be evidence of that. You have spent entirely too much digital ink accusing me of all manner of foul motives. You have questioned a fair number of enterprises that are pursuing worthwhile causes simply because I offer them guidance - as if my being involved somehow makes their effort less legitimate simply because you're unhappy with a tool I developed once upon a time. The fact that I had to point out your omission says it all to me. That's the bizarre politics of personal attack that I find troubling. While I agree with Rick that trolls are not unique to one side or the other, it's my perception that they're more common on the left. Having said that, I also recognize that it may well be selective perception. I spend more time on right-leaning blogs, and thus generally see more left-leaning trolls. Post for post, though, I have also spent enough time on Kos, MyDD and other sites to feel that our guys generally troll less.

Pardon... I forgot to add a link to that thread on Irregular Times I referenced: link P.S. Did you want to note that when you asked, I gave you credit for your change, or would that change the convenience of your story too much?

Be accurate before you smear, Michael Turk. 1. Right after you wrote this post, you came back to Irregular Times and posted an admission that your work with GOP.com, the work I had criticized, was something you were not proud of. 2. You posted on that thread right after I specifically repudiated the visitor to Irregular who claimed you were paid by Unity08 and who called you fat. I told that person off and said they should stick to the facts, and that whether you were fat or not was irrelevant to the matter at hand. I believe that. Next time you want to make a point about how evil liberals are, please be accurate.

Sigh. I had a Republican troll on my site for most of the '04 race. Made me feel like Harry Potter. Even gave him a nickname. I miss him. In all seriousness, though, this is precisely what's so disheartening about both sides of the aisle lately. I don't want a 50+1 president. I want someone the other side can look at and say, "I don't agree with him, but I understand him, and I trust him." Naive, I know.
