The problem is the argument. It is almost impossible to single out one key to a victory. It is much easier to single out items that cause defeat.

From what limited knowledge I have of the Bush (and RNC)and Kerry (and DNC) Campaign operations, I'd argue that if you switched online organizing programs Kerry might have won the last election. It seems to me that when you look at '04 it is very easy to tell that grassroots organizing made the difference and that Bush beat Kerry online. The fact is that Kerry and DNC leadership never understood what it takes to effectively organize online and decided that the internet was best used as a tool for raising money.

So while the Bush campaign ran a sophisticated (for 2004) online campaign the Kerry folks turned their grassroots folks into fundraisers and tried to win the election on TV. That didn't work. You had two horrible candidates neither of whom was capable of producing a memorable campaign moment or television ad.

If Republicans are looking for proof that online grassroots organizing can win elections they ought to go look in the Oval Office. That's as close as you are ever going to get. As a Democrat, I'm just thankful that the Republicans don't get it.
